In collaboration with Musik på Udden in Stockholm, the New European Ensemble is proud to present poetry from the new English translation of Kjell Espmark’s volume Bartók against the Third Reich.
Espmark is one of Sweden’s leading writers, literary historians as well as a professor of literature at Stockholm University. His poems were inspired by the musicians and composers banned by the Nazi regime. The poems focus on the historical events surrounding the Third Reich and give voice to the musical works that were banned and destroyed at the time.
Bartók’s music will be presented alongside works by Mendelssohn, Schulhoff, Janacek and the lesser known Hans Pfitzner and Erich Apostel.
