Deze bloemlezing maakt duidelijk dat Vaughan Williams ook als liedcomponist meer in zijn mars had dan zijn leermeesters Parry en Stanford. De melodische en harmonische vindingrijkheid mist zelfs in de liederen die rond de eeuwwisseling ontstonden en wortelen in het Victoriaanse tijdperk (Claribel, Dreamland, If I were a Queen) ook vandaag hun verfrissende uitwerking niet. De uitvoerenden voelen zich in dit repertoire als een vis in het water en leveren spirituele en technisch goed verzorgde vertolkingen af. Beans ragfijne viooltoon is een lust voor het oor en mengt zich perfect met Goldens stralende sopraan. De bescheiden bijdrage van de bariton mag er trouwens ook zijn.
