Een formidabele reactie van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest:
Response to withdrawal funding European Youth Orchestra
12 May 2016
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO) is deeply disappointed to learn of the decision by the European Union’s Creative Europe Programme to withdraw funding to the European Youth Orchestra (EUYO).
It is alarming that the EU has apparently concluded that the development of top musical talent, intercultural exchange and the collaboration between young talented musicians are no longer deserving of its support.
For years, the leading orchestras of Europe, including the RCO, have been fortunate enough to recruit many outstanding players from the ranks of this superb youth orchestra. We are very concerned indeed about this source of young talent drying up.
Polyphony and the symphonic music which emerged from it are a quintessential part of Europe’s cultural heritage. Cultural exchange and the development of talent, particularly that of younger generations, are pillars supporting European values and ensuring their future development. From 1976 to 2013, the EU supported the EUYO as a Cultural Ambassador. It is a bitter blow that the EUYO will now be forced to terminate its activities as from 1 September 2016, during the celebration of its fortieth anniversary.
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra strongly advocates the reinstatement of the EUYO’s funding.
